Genetically Modified Food

Image
44,426 letters and all the calls to Sonia Gandhi had some impact on the Government. The Biotechnology Regulatory Authority of India Bill did not make it to the Parliament. The bill in its current form plans to create an autocratic body to allow genetically modified (GM) food into our country. To take one more step towards safe food, Greenpeace has now launched the second edition of the Safe Food Guide. This guide ranks major food manufacturers on the basis of the stance they have taken on GM food. With the help of this guide you can check where the manufacturer of your favourite food brand stands on keeping food safe. The Safe Food Guide can be accessed online. Check out the Safe Food Guide 2.0 to see where your favourite food manufacturer stands. http://greenpeace.in/safefood/safe-food-guide/ You can also SMS Food to 56070 to find out where its manufacturer ranks in the guide. The brand name will give you the most accurate result. The Safe Food Guide tries to make food manu...

Climate Treaty Copenhagen

Image
World eagerly awaits for a treaty that would address to safeguard and protect the environment and hence the climate, greenpeace and others are on a 'jihad' to make sure it happens. Despite the dignitaries coming together for this cause, people who are involved still are not expecting  a sensible outcome but what they are hoping for is a miracle to happen. Has the matter of things been degraded to such a level that only miracles can solve the issue? Lets look at the issue at hand here, in a pictorial way   We all human beings are driven by our needs, desires and other activities which impact the world we live in, so there is your cause and there is your effect. Today we are driven by our own selfish desires, which unfortunately do not care much about the impact that it makes, like shown below. Today we are driven by our selfish goals, we are not ready to make some sacrifices and be a little selfless in our matters to reach a consensus for general well being, and yet we...

EeePC 1005HA note book:a wonderful experience

Image
After a long survey of laptops and notebooks scribbling through their specifications,I finally got one of my choice, the EeePC notebook.Every notebooks i looked at was having atom proceeser,1GB RAM,160GB hard disk bluetooth and wifi. My purpose was for making presentations for teaching and access of internet. Initially I looked for dell laptops and notebooks but one of my colleague had complaints regarding its service in smaller towns. Well HP was my next choice but value for money was a priority. and I didn’t like the screen of notebook as it was strenuous to look at it.Sony was never my choice because I could never justify the cost. So I thought of looking at Acer notebook,a cute one.The price was much less(16K) than others. The battery backup was 6 hours which was good enough, weight was 1.3 kgs.Everything was ok for me before the dealer had put the battery in its slot. The battery took an extra space in the back so overall the dimensions increased.I thought I cannot carry it in m...

cyclothon 09 participant details

Image
The BSA Hercules Cyclothon 09 Bangaluru was an awesome success !!! the participation shows it !!! Total rough estimate of participants is 7 to 8 thousand (optimistic) and 6000+ ( for sure). Corporate Participation was from 300 to 400 riders Accenture / Infosys had a group close to 100 IBM had a group of 15 of which 3 were girls, the over all estimated percentage of female participation is being put at about 5%. The arrangements were better than expected, the way they rented out bicycles was also impressive given the challenges of renting out bicycles for around 6k of people. The event re-affirms my belief that going green is a worthy cause to take up not just to keep our self healthy but also to contribute to the healthy living in general and most importantly to build a better tomorrow where coming generations would have a greener and healthier environment. Authorities please take a note, we need bicycle lanes in bangalore.

Nobel Prize Medicine 2009

Image
Elizabeth Blackburn, Carol Greider and Jack Szostak identified a key molecular switch in cellular ageing for which they were awarded Nobel prize. The institute said the three had solved a major problem in biology, namely how chromosomes were copied completely during cell division and protected against degradation. At the ends of chromosomes are small caps called telomeres, which prevent the cells from degrading. Blackburn and Greider identified telomerase, an enzyme that forms these caps. Meanwhile, research by Szostak and Blackburn cast light on how the shortening of the caps was linked to ageing. The discoveries...have added a new dimension to our understanding of the cell, shed light on disease mechanisms, and stimulated the development of potential new therapies, it said The efforts that bring well being and benefits to humanity and life can never be truly rewarded. Let those rewards be with awards, cash or words of praise, let us assume that these findings lead cure or me...

The Virtues of Miswaak.

Image
Bismillahir rahmaanir raheem Islam stresses a lot on personal hygiene. A Muslim must be pure to offer prayers to Allah subhanwathala who the purest. Allah has shown the entire humanity how to lead a pure life by the example of our prophet (sallalaho alayhi wassallam). Every act of our prophet (SAWS) is regarded as sunnath and is loved by Allah. Our prophet used to keep himself clean and pure. The mouth that recites the precious names of allah and his prophet(SAWS) should be clean. The way that our prophet (SAWS) has shown is by using miswaak. Islam has accorded an elevated status to the Miswaak. Its importance has been stressed in many Ahadith of our Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam)who used the stick of piloo tree to clean his teeth. Different ahadees have revealed the benefits of miswaak. “Abu Ayyub (Radhiyallaho anho) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said: ‘Four things are amongst the practices of the Ambiyaa(prophets)—modesty, application of perfume, miswaak an...

Bicycle Tube - Things To Consider

Image
Bicycle Tubes , they force you to frequent to a bicycle store/workshop, either for a puncture or for air filling. The visit can be reduced if not eliminated by Use Butyl tube instead of Latex, they are stronger, lighter and can retain precious pascals for longer periods of time. Have a spare tube with you always. If a tube has a habit of frequent punctures its good to replace it soon than fix the puncture again and again. One of my factory fitted tubes had frequent puncture problems this was fixed once changed the tube for good. Butyl tubes are costlier compared to latex ones, but yes the cost is justified for what you get back. Share your happiness with your workshop guy too, give him some Tip once in a while.

Genitically modified crops, Electronic Gadgets, AC, Toxic Wastes - Earth taken for granted

Image
Your support and continuous financial contributions are what give Greenpeace the strength to battle the dangerous global environmental threats facing our planet today. In order to preserve our independence and objectivity, Greenpeace does not accept funding from corporates or governments. This makes your support absolutely vital to our cause. While your financial support is invaluable, there are other ways in which you can support our campaigns. 1)--Greenpeace is working worldwide to prevent potentially harmful genetically modified crops from entering our food chain. As a consumer, you have the power to tell governments that you don't want to be subjected to this untested technology. Check the labels on the food that you buy and say no to genetically engineered food. 2)--Planning to buy a phone, a PC, or a laptop? Many electronics products manufactured in India contain extremely toxic chemicals and metals that are harmful to human health. Greenpeace is working to make computers an...

Bicycling to office - Hercules Ryders

Image
Now more than 7 months into bicycling office, am seeing growing interest in folks who wants to ride to office, indeed a better choice for health, wealth and environment. Just recently saw a guy coming to EGL with full bicycle gear, good going bro!!!. Now an official parking slot for bicycle is coming up, (yet to be announced from the concerned people officially, since at-least a year). More than twenty plus now ride to office and that number would hopefully keep growing. I am very much satisfied with my bicycle, Hercules Ryders, its been a worty investment. Plus I sold my Fiero bike and don’t feel the need of it :). Riding to Manyata and back (10 km in half an hour, how long does it take for you in car :)? ) Riding in the rain wearing rain coat (realizing a dream)

Hercules Ryders : My Bike :)

I got the one without the Alloy, alhamdulillah, 7Kg heavier but at half the price of the Alloy. Two trips to office in bangalore traffic, flyovers, non level roads, side ways, side roads, foot path and what ever, there is always a way (insha allah).
