Quran Page 14: Truth, Recognition, and Jealousy (Surah Al-Baqarah 89-93)

📖 About Surah Al-Baqarah (Page 14)

In Page 14, we learn about the psychological barriers to faith. The verses describe how those who were waiting for a Prophet recognized Muhammad (PBUH) just as they recognized their own sons, yet they rejected him due to envy (Baghyan). The page also revisits the scene at Mount Tur, reminding us that true faith requires listening and obeying, rather than saying "We hear and we disobey."

🌍 English Translation (Sahih International)

89. And when there came to them a Book from Allah confirming that which was with them... they disbelieved in it; so the curse of Allah is upon the disbelievers.
90. Wretched is that for which they sold themselves - that they would disbelieve in what Allah has revealed through [grudging] envy...
93. And [recall] when We took your covenant and raised over you the mount, [saying], "Take what We have given you with determination and listen." They said [with their actions], "We hear and disobey."

💡 Vocabulary & Tajwid Insights

Arabic Word Meaning / Rule
Baghyan (بَغْيًا) Insolence, envy, or seeking beyond one's right.
Muheen (مُهِينٌ) Humiliating or disgraceful (referring to punishment).
Tajwid Rule Tanween with Ikhfa: In verse 90, "Ghadabin 'ala Ghadab" (غَضَبٍ عَلَىٰ). The first tanween is Izhar (clear) because of the 'Ayn, but watch for other tanweens followed by letters of Ikhfa for a nasal sound.
